Between 2011-14, the artist engaged in the creation of numerous maps depicting various cities, drawing inspiration from both the historical and contemporary cartography of these places. Benares holds a place in the artist’s memory from childhood. Utilising recycled materials, such as small cloth remnants sourced from tailors and larger fabric pieces found at second-hand markets, the artist focused on creating a visual language making large-scale artworks that required certain technical expertise using her hands.
Khurana employs an energetic orange background before stitching fragments of recycled cloth to create the birds eye view of Benaras (also known as Varanasi), complete with the Ganges river and vibrant pockets of habitation. Khurana’s approach to mapping is unique in the way she combines the historical and contemporary identities of the land.
