Baroda Slate 8,

24 carat gold on slate 19.6 × 25.5 cm

In this series, Khurana explores Baroda through a host of varying lenses. Using composition to hone in on sections of the city, creating a visual interpretation of places as layered tapestries. The series provides an in-depth analysis of the role of maps in depicting a simplification of territories

Artist statement: My recent work explores the idea of a Map as an object with formal qualities of line, colour and shape. Maps to me are reminders of boundaries, cultures, nations and identities. Moreover, my maps are formal explorations; visual interpretations of places as layered tapestries. Maps are linear representations of physical spaces drawn according to scale. However, the representational nature of a map forces a simplification of the territory it represents therefore making it incomplete.
